The winter solstice is the day of the return of the light, the Sun’s rebirth, the pivotal point of sacred transformation for the year, the
fulcrum of all deep rituals and profound meditations. The solstice is a
day on which the wonder of the celestial light can be drawn into our
lives. It is a time in which the prana dwells in the Mul...adhara
or Earth chakra and gets renewed, much like in the state of deep sleep.
On this day and the following week we can unite Heaven and Earth, the
Sun and the Earth, the fire within and the fire above.
This year we had the amazing wonder of a full lunar eclipse on the night prior to
the solstice, a many century event. It brought us in touch with the
beauty and peace that envelopes us on every side in life and benignly
looks over us from the powers of light above.
This is an unfortunate tendency for people today to look at such celestial wonders
only according to what it might mean for society, nations and potential
earth changes, or what it might mean for one’s personal or family happy
and well-being – as if these events were all about us and staged mainly
for their effects upon us. While such effects do exist and are worthy of
consideration, we should not stop there or make it the main point of
our examination.
All such celestial wonders have a deeper meaning than such merely human interpretations or ramifications. They
are doorways that can take us beyond time and its turbulence and into
the infinite and eternal, into the cosmic mind itself, in which our
personal and human problems and limitations can be transcended into an
everlasting and unbounded peace and joy. Their main power is as special
points of sadhana or inner spiritual practice, not as mere outer signs
or as nature’s entertainment for us.
Such celestial events are messages from the greater universe of consciousness that our true home
lies beyond, that we have access to it, and that our lives on Earth can
be a prayer, a blessing, a state of samadhi or bliss – a means of
embodying that higher awareness in the matrix of nature here, where it
is vibrating around us in the very ground itself.
Our lives are filled with such potential magic moments but we easily miss them. Many
are simple like sunrise and sunset or the change of seasons. The plants,
animals and rocks all have such powers to take us into the greater
universe. However, we are usually too preoccupied with our own personal
problems and social and political affairs, so that we are not even
looking at nature, much less looking deep within ourselves where the
spirit ever dwells. Even if we are involved in religion and
spirituality, it is usually more the politics and social dynamics of it
that drives our interest, not diving into the essence which resides
beyond all names, forms, ideologies, beliefs and institutions.
The media is making our lives dull, dissociated from nature, reducing our
direct experience of our own individual existence and getting us caught
up in transient affairs of others. Certainly we need our computers and
can benefit by them. Certainly we need to know what is happening in the
ever complex and changing human world around us and the media has its
role. But we also have a deeper need and purpose in life than knowing
what is happening at an outer level in the human world. We need to be
aware of life, of nature, of the universe, not through the lens or
filter of our human preoccupations, but with a clear, open and receptive
mind and heart, one that can touch the grace and be one with all.
May our lives always be filled with wonder and open to the unknown! May we
for a sacred moment be able to forget ourselves and forget the human
world and move far into the cosmic vastnesses of your own heart! And may
that awareness be our blessing that we share for the benefit of all!
